About this deal

I felt that the book dragged a bit in places, particularly in the lead-up to the birth of Scissor Sisters. I wonder if my aversion to dirt and disinterest was disappointing, as it slowly dawned on him that his son wasn’t forming in his image? NetGalley and Atria Books provided me an advance copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review. He endures interesting work and living situations, but slowly begins to realize he feels most alive when in front of a crowd, whether dancing on top of a bar in his underwear, performing in drag, or finally, writing and performing music he wrote. But as much as this book is about the rise of Scissor Sisters and how Jake dealt with finally achieving his dreams, Boys Keep Swinging is so much more than that—it's a poignant and entertaining look at one man's quest for happiness, a sense of belonging, and peace with himself. To challenge me, my first-grade teacher gave me a copy of A Wrinkle in Time, and I attacked it with a puzzled vigor.I was obsessed with books and got the hang of reading from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s innocuous prairie tales, the Wizard of Oz books, and Raggedy Ann and Andy’s psychedelic journeys.

The book is split into three sections – Youth, New York and Scissor Sisters – and it tells anecdotes and stories that highlights Shears’ journey from outspoken but closeted child to worldwide superstar.

Fortunately, Shears today seems like he’s in a pretty good place: he’s starring in Broadway’s “Kinky Boots” and he has a solo album due out later this year (“some of the best music I’ve made,” he notes in the epilogue to his book). It always plunked on the ground yards away from me, like a dead shooting star, its flame long extinguished. Much memory is grimy and covered with fuzz, like a component of some unknown thing that was left under your couch for years, attracting dust bunnies. It sat on a square piece of land surrounded by orange groves and a cotton field, which was sometimes also a watermelon patch.
