a b c d e f g h Yanow, Scott. "Cannonball Adderley – Music Biography, Credits and Discography". AllMusic . Retrieved July 8, 2012. MURRAY HORWITZ: That's the title tune from the album Somethin' Else and that wonderful conversation between Miles Davis on trumpet and Cannonball Adderley on alto sax. Tell me about those contrasting styles, because it's a wonderful coupling. It's like they say — a terrific conversation. From the rather austere opening chords from pianist Hank Jones and the horns, to the melancholy statement of the theme by Miles to Adderley’s effervescent solo with his blues drenched alto sound. This is immediately followed by ‘ Love For Sale‘ (another Davis staple) taken a bright and breezy tempo with the trumpeter once again using the Harmon mute. Notable Alphas" (PDF). As Billboard magazine said in October 1958 in its review of the LP, “Here’s one of the outstanding jazz sets released in the past few months and perhaps one of the best of the year. It features some truly fine, sensitive trumpet work by Miles Davis, and at times, some of the best work yet waxed by Cannonball Adderley. Both ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘Love for Sale’ are handed superb treatments by Davis, and Adderley shines with his solo on ‘Dancing in the Dark.’ An album that will be important to all jazz fans.” In July 1975, Adderley suffered a stroke from a cerebral hemorrhage and died four weeks later, on August 8, 1975, at St. Mary Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana. [2] He was 46 years old. [2] He was survived by his wife Olga James Adderley, parents Julian C. and Jessie L. Adderley, and brother Nat Adderley. [16] He was buried in the Southside Cemetery, Tallahassee. [17] Legacy [ edit ] Jazz has no place for stagnation. I know one thing for sure. You can’t repeat yourself night after night when you’re working with Miles Davis. Miles and Coltrane are creating all the time and the challenge is tremendous…Miles group is at is should be. It’s a laboratory. New and exciting music is played each night… I learn so much being around him.”But here, Cannonball has been working with Miles Davis, and he's been working in a band with John Coltrane and Bill Evans. And you don't fool around in that band. You take things very seriously because there's some deep music being made there. This is the band that made Kind of Blue. Randel, Don Michael (1996). The new quintet, which later became the Cannonball Adderley Sextet, and Cannonball's other combos and groups, included such noted musicians as saxophonists Charles Lloyd and Yusef Lateef, pianists Bobby Timmons, Barry Harris, Victor Feldman, Joe Zawinul, Hal Galper, Michael Wolff, and George Duke, bassists Ray Brown, Sam Jones, Walter Booker, and Victor Gaskin, and drummers Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy. Miles sits this one out, and Adderley treats us to a beautiful reading of the tune, and equally gorgeous solo to match. Miles follows on muted trumpet and his solo is a beauty. A model of restraint, his solo is economy in motion, throwing the alto solo into stark relief. This restraint and is then imposed on Hank Jones who also produces a solo that is devoid of any superfluous notes or gestures. DownBeat Hall of Fame". DownBeat.
