About this deal

Of course, the high-end price tag isn’t just due to the hybrid functionality on offer (that’d be ridiculous), in fact it’s the rest of the innards – including 18mm planar magnetic transducers – that bring the price tag right up. You intend to wear your earbuds all day: Even at its best, the battery life available here is nothing special – long-haul flights are a non-starter. The battery is pretty good, the TWS 1/ able to last for 34 hours with ANC on, which is better than the AirPods Pro 2 and WF-1000XM4. Charging is a choice of USB-C and via any Qi-enabled wireless charging pad, and with the IPX4 resistance against moisture, you can consider these as an option for runs and workouts, too. Samsung has been taking lessons from Apple, it seems – many of the best functions of these earbuds are reserved only for users of Samsung phones, making them a harder sell for those of us who don’t worship at the altar of the South Korean tech giant.

Weight: 76g with case | Battery life: 15 hours (up to 45 hours with case) | Bluetooth: 5.0 | Waterproof: IPX2 | Mics: 1 Elsewhere, the AZ80 – along with their AZ60M2 stablemates – are the first earbuds to support Bluetooth Multipoint across three devices, which is a big bonus if you find yourself frequently switching between input sources. Touch controls are well-implemented and customisable, while the engaging default audio tuning can also be easily altered via the accompanying Technics Audio Connect app.Although we have dedicated testing facilities in London, Reading and Bath, the bulk of our wireless earbuds testing happens outside those facilities, whether that's on the street or in our busy office. The sound’s fantastic via Samsung devices, but less stellar via other equipment, with barely-there bass, although it’s pleasingly melodic in the upper ranges. This is a great choice if you’ve got a Samsung phone, but best avoided for iPhone fans since you don’t even get an app. We put true wireless earphones through their paces by performing battery drains to ensure they last as long as they’re meant to. We test the noise cancellation and wireless performance in a number of environments to gauge how good/effective it is, and of course we’ve got keen ears to listen to how they sound. At this price, the Technics are up against some heavy hitters from the biggest brands. But bog-standard battery life aside, the EAH-AZ70W make a strong case for themselves.

With more than 30 years experience in testing and reviewing consumer audio products for all kinds of media outlets and big-name brands around the world, the Tom's Guide audio team follows a rigorous test regime when it comes to determining the best products for recommendation in our buying guides. The Ultra actually replace the company's 2022 What Hi-Fi? Award winner – the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, so shop around and you might be able to find a big chunk of cash slashed off the older pair. It's an option worth considering. For the rest of us, the big selling point will be the battery life. Since the UW100 isn’t constantly expending energy on cancelling out sounds, its batteries last longer than any other earbud we tested. Apple may be the innovator here, but in recent years, other brands have taken the lead in bluetooth headphones when it comes to sound quality, with tech giants introducing their own variants such as Samsung Galaxybuds and ‘serious’ audio companies such as Technics entering the market with wireless earphones designed to deliver high-quality sound. Design changes are subtle between the Pro and Pro 2 models. You’ll find a typical Apple-esque look here, with slightly protruding stems, clean lines and a bright white finish. During our testing, we were happy to find there are now extra small ear tips, great news for those with smaller ears and should fit most people well. We found these buds operated well across all Bluetooth-enabled devices, but Galaxy smartphone owners get to enjoy cool features like Easy Pairing and compatibility with Samsung's Scalable Codec. It’s upsetting that Bixby (Samsung's voice assistant) doesn’t perform up to its potential, though the mediocre battery life with ANC on is a greater disappointment. Since our review, Galaxy smartphone and Buds 2 Pro owners now get 360-degree audio recording, too. During the testing phase, our reviewers wear each pair of headphones for several hours at a time throughout the course of a week. Reviewers will make a note of the battery life performance in real world use, and assess how well this matches the rated battery life provided by earbud makers.

Sound quality:Different models offer different sound, and since you’re buying a pair to enjoy music individually, it’s important to find headphones that match your sound preference, be it heavy bass or distinctively clear to where you can hear the littlest nuances in recordings. Some models like the NuraTrue Pro (top) offer personalized sound via companion app, which allows the user to create their own profiles and tweak EQ levels to their hearing. Their ability in the latter department is aided by the inclusion of active noise cancellation, of which there are six levels, an IPX4 rating certifies them water resistant and a fleshed-out companion app lets you customise your experience to a pleasing degree. On the audio front, the Tune Flex offer a warm, engaging sound signature that lends itself well to mainstream pop music, while call quality is another of their strong suits.Everything about the Earfun Air is enjoyably unpretentious. The charging case they come in looks and feels good, and the earbuds themselves are well made and easy to position comfortably. With seven hours of power in the ‘buds and another 28 hours in the case, the Air will keep you company for ages before they need a sniff of mains power. Their IPX7 rating means they’ll put up with quite a lot in terms of damp and dust, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity means they can handle hi-res audio files from Qobuz or Tidal with no problems. Bowers & Wilkins has taken its sweet time to bring a true wireless in-ear design to market, but the PI7 are worth the wait. Most important of all is the way they sound, of course - and thanks to a hybrid system of balanced armature in conjunction with a 9.2mm dynamic driver in each earbud, they sound excellent. The soundstage they create is sizeable and well defined, the tonality from the top of the frequency range to the bottom is balanced and believable, and they retrieve as much detail as a scene-of-crime investigator. In absolute terms, they’re a match for the best-sounding true wireless in-ear headphones around. You won’t find ANC here, but that’s not expected at this price. What you do get is great battery life that punches above their weight, as during testing we found JLab’s claims of 32 hours total playtime to largely ring true. They should be good for a week’s use before you need to plug them in, an easy feat with the built-in charging cable. Samsung owners can enjoy extremely sharp-sounding music via a Samsung-only codec, Samsung Seamless – everyone else is downgraded to the worse-sounding SBC or AAC codecs (although Apple fans won’t notice, as this is all they get anyway).
